Thursday March 16 2017 WHY WERE YOU BORN?

Thursday March 16 2017  WHY WERE YOU BORN?

A few weeks ago I received a letter with an interesting question.  The young person writing the letter questioned, “Why does God want us to worship Him?”

The next morning I was at the gym and wanted to listen to a sermon from Southland Christian Church in Kentucky but I had already listened to over nine years worth of sermons since visiting this church last April.  I had no more new sermons to listen to as I was up to date on those currently recorded.  So I scrolled down, asking God what He wanted me to learn that day.  And the sermon I refer to in this blog is the one that surfaced.  It is so like God to bring up that exact sermon because it was pertinent to the question I had received in the mail the prior afternoon.  Since that time I have been listening the sermon over and over.  Each time I receive new insight, understanding, and revelation through the words presented by Jon Weece

The following blog is a recap of a sermon I have listened to online.  Directions for navigating to the series on the web will follow this blog.  Some of blog is quoted verbatim.  In essence I am sharing Jon Weece’s sermon as if it were a book report.

I hope this “report” will whet your appetite to listen to this sermon, as well as many of the other sermons available on the website.  Open your heart to receive the spoken words.  When I discovered this site I felt as if I had opened a treasure chest. All five sermons in this series are excellent.

I hope you enjoy my “book report” in its condensed version.

Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”

Have  you ever been asked the question: “Why were you born?”.

Why is it important to know?

What is your purpose in life?

The sermon I listened to is about this very topic.  Why are we born?  The speaker was once asked that question for an assignment when he was in grade school.  When he stood up in front of the class to deliver his oral report he said, “I was born to worship”.

As an adult speaker he still agrees with that assumption.  His premise is that everybody worships something.  He was told as a young child that “giving worship was nothing more than giving praise where praise is due”.

Following are the synonyms for worship: adoration, love, reverence, respect, devotion, veneration, and adore.

In reference to the above synonyms given for worship I agree with Pastor Weece that we as a human race all take part in worshipping some “one” or some “thing”. Since I am most familiar with the lifestyle of our own country I will focus on where we as a nation seem to focus our worship.  Popular culture seems to hold the most prestige; rock stars, movie stars, sports, and music.

God, Who created all things and for Whom all things were created, where does He come into the scheme of worship?  And why does God want us to worship Him?

When we worship God what does it do for God?  What does it do for us?

Following are four points from the sermon regarding why we worship God.

“WHEN WE WORSHIP IT ELEVATES US.”

Regardless of our reality down here on earth it does not adversely affect what is happening in heaven.  Worship allows us to reach the throne of God and receive a touch from heaven.  “Worship ELEVATES us” because WE reach upward to God.

“WORSHIP CENTERS US.”

Worship allows us to look above the highest position here on earth; above all men, all palaces, all earthly thrones, and to be aware that there is a higher infinite being who is God.  John Weece quotes: “When we see God we are left speechless and fearless.”  When we worship we come to a place of connection with God and all our earthly concerns assume their proper size.  Worship allows us to experience God in a way that “allows us to see God for who He is and how powerful He is and how good He is and how benevolent He is”.  It reminds us that God sees everything, knows everything, and is omnipresent; He is everywhere at once.

“God reigns and rules from a perpetual posture of goodness.    He always has your best interest in mind  and when we worship Him we are always ELEVATED and CENTERED on that reality.  When we worship we are aware of that reality.”

“WORSHIP DISPLACES US.”

When we realize who God is and that the fact that He is the center of the universe that He created, is when we understand worship. “We bow because worship happens when we elevate our hearts above our heads.”  When we realize who God IS and that we are not the center of the universe, it affects our hearts.  It is when we realize who God is and who we are not, it will change how we worship and how we live.

Revelation 4: 8b-11  New International Version

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’[b]

who was, and is, and is to come.”

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
    and have their being.”

“WORSHIP UNITES US.”

Revelation 5:11-13 New International Version

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
forever and ever!”

14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.”

All creation is united around one reality and that is worshipping its creator.  We were alienated because of sin in the garden and now must work to love one another.  There is tension and misunderstanding between people and nations.  God’s original order was disrupted when sin entered the world and we have earthquakes and other global catastrophes.

Only worship reunites us with our creator as God originally planned.  The songs we sing in worship to the Lord are like a map leading us to his throne room.  God has placed music within us and it is through this music of worship that we once again connect with Him.

Words from this song of long ago speak loudly of what worship accomplishes.

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,

In the light of His glory and grace.”

“When you realize that the God of the universe came down off of His throne and gave His life up for you, you’ll want to give your life back.  That’s the gift.  We call that worship. Praising somebody who is worthy of being praised… That’s why I am here.  That’s why I was born.”

TO WHOM PRAISE IS DUE

God in His magnificence

Came down from His throne.

He offered a gift

Like none ever known.

He breached the chasm

That sin had displaced,

Allowing us once again

To meet face to face.

And while on earth

We are justified,

Cleansed by His blood

Death to defy.

Only the God of heaven

Could our breach sanctify

And only by His blood

Was our heart purified.

God who created

All heaven and earth,

Even the universe

By Him was birthed.

And through our worship

We are touched by glory.

When we bow at His throne

We are part of His story.

God’s power exceeds

Our finite mind,

And our praise due Him

Because He’s one of a kind!

No other power on heaven or earth

Could do what God’s done

By making life possible

Through the gift of His Son.

More than anything else

He desires our fraternity

That we will live forever

With Him in eternity.

So we glorify God

Because he loves me and you

And we worship by giving praise

To Whom Praise is due.

Thank You God for the question I received that gave me so much thought as to why we worship You.

Thank You for guiding me to the words I need to hear.

Thank You for the seeking hearts of young people.

Thank You Lord for loving each one of us enough to die that our sins would be forgiven.

Thank You for Your beautiful creations of earth and sky.

Thank You for the gift of life.

GOOD NIGHT AND GOD BLESS YOU.

Tuesday January 31 2017 KEEPING ON TASK

Tuesday January 31 2017  KEEPING ON TASK

Yesterday I originally titled my blog “KEEPING ON TASK”  I had originally intended to write a sentence that said it was a good thing I write a blog because it was the only thing that made certain I knew what day of the week it is. I ended up writing about a different topic so I renamed the title.  And lo and behold what did I do but actually write the wrong day of the week before the title.  Whew, it was a good thing I didn’t use that title yesterday.  I fear my kids might think I was losing it a bit.  No comments please!  I did notice the incorrect day but not before my sister did.  I received her loving message to CORRECT IT!

So, today is Tuesday, the last day of January 2017.  How is that?  And every day I am trying to stay on task so I remember the days of the week.  Remember my mantra after I retired “Every day is Saturday”?  Since I have been traveling, everyday has no day of the week or number attached to it.  I just seem to be living without time passing.

All too soon it will come to an end and reality will again greet me.  It is just awesome to be here with Lana, enjoying her company, as well as cooking and helping in other areas.  No outside pressures, no places to go, no phone calls or appointments to keep.  Even though I am here to help it’s as if all pressures and tensions have disappeared.  I have no demanding goals, nothing calling my name except to just do what I am here to do.  And I enjoy everything thing I can do for Lana.  My body is taking a break from the gym and I am sleeping soundly on an air mattress designed by Lazy Boy.  The weather is a balmy 78 degrees and the sun is shining.  It is awesome!

SOMEHOW IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Oh the difference a day makes

When traveling away from home

Farther afield pressures shed

The longer that we roam.

Somehow it makes a difference

Not to be looking at your own mess.

It is quite a comfortable reprieve

I really must confess.

The expanse and wonder

Of the great outdoors

Seems to open the mind a bit,

And settle inner wars.

So much to do when surrounded

By all that is not in order.

Perhaps I should work for someone else

And let another be my sorter.

Days and miles separate space

From all normal cares and woes.

But I sure miss my hubby

From my head to my toes.

As I see the wonders of the miles

He waits patiently for my return,

And my heart belongs to him,

For his love I do yearn.

Thank You God for such a wonderful husband who waits patiently for my return.

Thank You God for Lana’s daily healing.

Thank You for allowing me to be here with her.

GOOD NIGHT AND GOD BLESS YOU!

REMEMBER TO KEEP ON TASK!

Tuesday January 24 2017 WOW WHAT A DAY

Tuesday January 24 2017  A WOW DAY!

WOW, what a day.  Here it is Tuesday morning and Marilyn and I are already in Des Moines Iowa.  After hearing the forecast this morning regarding the impending storm coming our way I thought it best to outrun the storm rather than drive in it tomorrow morning.  At 7:30 a.m. this morning I called Marilyn to see if she could be ready to leave by noon.  She said yes.

My suitcase was still in the closet, but not for long.  I have never packed so quickly and efficiently as I did today.  My suitcase was packed, food was prepared for lunches and dinners, and the car was packed by 11:30 a.m.  I was ready to leave when our son called and we had a nice conversation and then I was out of there.  It would have never happened without Dave’s help.  He helped with the food, cleaned up the mess I left, helped load the car, and gave me lots of love and kisses.

My little Kia soul still had lots of room for Marilyn’s belongings. There was an obvious difference of how little I packed this go round in comparison to two years ago.  Quite refreshing.  And still, I probably packed more than I needed.  It’s just the “what if’s” that take up so much space.

The drive to Des Moines was a wonderful experience with Marilyn as my passenger.  We prayed, stopped at the potty place, laughed, stopped at the gas station, sang, stopped at the MacDonald’s place, reminisced, stopped at Casey’s General Store, ate, and you guessed it, stopped at another place that had a rest room.  Lots of stops, two old bladders, but we finally arrived.

Des Moines greeted us with snowflakes the size of silver dollars.  Unbelievable to watch in the lights of the highway.  Earlier we had hail for a short period of time when the temperature dropped.  A few moments later the temperature rose and the hail immediately ended.  It wasn’t until we hit the more crowded city highways that the huge snowflakes began.  And then it started sleeting.

We only saw one car in the median of a highway but it was enough for the other drivers to slow down their speed.  My car had a difficult time stopping at a downhill light.   But we finally arrived to our destination and are safe, and mostly sound.  We had a wonderful welcome and our Airbnb host offered his assistance to unload.  We were very grateful.

Earlier at one of our potty rendezvous Marilyn did not see a step-down curb at a gas station and fell on her right side.  She hurt one finger, her ankle, and her right knee.  I made icepacks for her and she kept the injured sites iced for a while.  She still has some swelling, pain, and bruising.  I am so hoping that she will be improved by morning.  Please remember her in your prayers.

Wow, what a day

What more can I say?

Time is fleeting

And sleep I’m needing.

I must crash

Before I’m cashed.

Time has lent

And I am spent.

Thank You God for out safe arrival to our destination.

Thank You Lord that Marilyn did not break any bones.

Please pray for Marilyn’s speedy recovery.

GOOD NIGHT AND GOD BLESS YOU!

A SACRED BIRTH

The earth sleeps in somber pose

No song birds sing; no blooming rose.

A quiet hush falls across the land

Winter’s chill in quiet command.

Muted light brightens snow

Casting shadows far below.

A time of reverence hearkens all

Who answer the message, the fervent call.

The call of the heart in seasonal bliss,

Jesus’ birth, a celebrated kiss.

A moment in time to celebrate love.

A Christmas moment from heaven above.

A point in time to experience the essence

Of a sacred birth when Jesus was present.

Once a year pause and savor

The royal birth of our precious Savior.

Friday November 25 2016 THE DAY AFTER

Friday November 25 2016  THE DAY AFTER

Today is a gift to me.  I have given myself permission to do as I please, go where I please, and get home when I please: no exercise, no appointments, and no hurry.  So that is why I am writing early this morning.  I WANT TO BE FREE FROM ALL “HAVE TOO’S”.  (How do you like my made-up word?)  No comments please.

Yesterday was delightful.  We bucked the system and had lasagna for our Thanksgiving dinner.  And believe me I was so thankful that I didn’t need to handle a big bird and all the falderal of preparing it.  I made my lasagna last week, put it in the refrigerator for 48 hours and then froze it.  I took it out of the freezer Wednesday night and left it in the garage wrapped in a large clean bath towel.  Thursday morning I set it in the kitchen as it was still frozen but beginning to soften.  It was thawed by the time I put it in the oven.  And it was delicious!

My friend sent me a wonderful creamy Italian dressing recipe for my salad and it was a big hit.  I served a side of roasted Brussels sprouts (which is also what I ate for breakfast this morning), fresh fruit brought by our daughter-in-law, garlic French baguette, and the delicious salad topped with my new dressing.  It was better than a five star restaurant, even if I do say so myself.  It was finished off with fresh baked carrot cake muffins.  And three of the muffins had a candle on top.  I won’t mention the silk pumpkin pie (a gift baked by our neighbors) that we ate later!  It was DELICIOUS!

Yesterday was a twofold celebration!  First on the agenda was Thanksgiving and we conveniently combined the celebration of three birthdays.  Our daughter-in-law and our grandsons have all celebrated recent birthdays and due to schedules we had no time to have birthday parties for any of them.  We did have opportunity to attend our Grandson’s birthday parties with their school friends but as far as I am concerned the party that counts is the one we have with the family.  As long as I am able I hope to be able to do something special for them to celebrate their life.  We had a great party including a time of games and gift opening.  Our Christmas tree was lit up and it was almost a bit like a pre-Christmas.  Who knows, maybe we’ll leave the tree up all year.  It is so festive and brightens up the room.

The best part about the evening was that there was no television blaring and no heads stuck in electronic games.  It was just plain and pure interactive fun.  The boys were also excited to look and see what was in their buckets.  I have two little pails that look like the sand pails kids use at the beach, but much smaller.  Their little pails sit on a shelf in the kitchen.  As I collect little things from give-aways,  stickers that come in mailings, wrapped treats from the bank, perhaps a piece of leftover Halloween candy, little stuffed animals or figurines the kids might like, I stick it in their pails.  Between visits the items just seems to add up.  And that’s the first place they check when they come over.  Tonight however they had to wait until after dinner!  It just raised their anticipation a little as they could see all kinds of fun things peeking over the tops.  Oh the joys of childhood.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it took so little to satisfy us as we got older?

I am so thankful for our grandsons.  They are truly a gift to us.  It warms our hearts to watch our children parent, hear their concerns, and know they are being so diligent in all they can do to prepare their sons for the world we live in.  I feel so blessed to be their grandmother and I hope they remember these fun filled days of their youth.  Some memories gain importance as the years pass.  I want to leave a legacy of loving memories for them to look back upon.

CREATING MEMORIES DRESSINGS

It comes but once a year

A day in which to give thanks.

And because it is on the calendar

It’s a day of high ranks.

But wouldn’t it even be better

If it happened every day,

That we would pause to give thanks

And Thanksgiving with us would stay?

So each day give simple pause

And be grateful for life’s blessings.

Create a legacy of lasting love

Trimmed in memory’s dressings.

Express care to those you love,

Show kindness to everyone.

Say thank you for what others do,

And be part of life’s fun.

Every day should be celebrated

By being, loving, and giving,

Be a blessing to those you meet

Expressed by how you’re living.

And every day will be a day

When Thanksgiving is born anew.

It needn’t be on a special Thursday,

But be celebrated all year through.

Thank You God for the memories created yesterday.

Thank You for life today.

Thank You for the tomorrows you have planned.

And thank You that my days are numbered and I need not fear death.

HAVE A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING WEEKEND!  GOD BLESS YOU!
